This is the fourth and last post in my series “Getting What You Want”.
If you’ve been doing your homework then so far you have:
*Made a list of your goals
*Reflected on your current commitments that are effortless and why that is
*Narrowed your focus to what you’d really like to achieve right now
The last step is taking action.
Action is the process of doing something, typically to achieve a desired outcome.
Actually it’s not just about taking action, it’s about taking the right, focused, insightful action for your situation. By taking the first 3 steps above you are ready to take this kind of action, but the secret to real change is that it has to fit easily into your current lifestyle to work.
These first 3 parts all happen at the thought level. It’s easy to have thoughts because that’s what our brains are designed to do. The last step, moving your thoughts and insights into right, focused action, can feel a bit more difficult. Our primitive brain holds us back wanting us to feel comfortable and safe with little energy expenditure 100% of the time which makes every new action seem hard or like loss. For sustainable change we need to keep moving forward despite this block!
Your homework for this week is to take your goal, break it into ridiculously easy small steps and then look at your calendar and plug in when you will take these steps. Commit to yourself and these actions just as if you were doing them for a loved one you would never let down. You, in fact, should be the ultimate loved one that you don’t let down from now on. Commit to these action steps for a week. Notice with no judgement how it goes. At the end of the week reassess your actions and your calendar for the next week and keep going!
If you find that going it alone is not working, or you need specific help managing your thoughts, emotions or schedule I'd love to coach you through the process!
